Make Yourself Look Good

Everywhere I read they say that you should use a “retinoid” or “Retinol” cream for skin care. I’ve read

articles that state this cream can restore some of the collagen that is lost with normal aging. The problem is that I don’t know where to buy this cream. Sure, I can go to a cosmetics counter and ask for a cream with Retinol, but how do I know I am not being ripped-off? The skin care industry is rife with fraud and lies. I simply don’t trust them. So, my question is:1) What is a good Retinol cream that has enough concentration of the active ingredients (with no gimmicks)? 2) Is there an independant site I can go to that would give me unbiased and scientifically sound advice on skin care (including recommendations on which products to buy)?

I understand your concern. It is difficult to assess the quality of a product if you don’t have the resources and background. Several companies abuses this by using products that were shown to be effective in addressing aging skin concerns, but do not use enough of it to be effective. Then you’re buying an expensive, ineffective product. I am a chemist by career and we use sources such as pubmed.com or webofknowledge to look up articles.

Here is how I would go about doing it. If you’re interested in a product, look it up on their website. Find would which active ingredient they are using and whether are clincial studies. If no clincial studies (with enough people to make it statistically believable) then go to one of the site above and look up their references. Usually, if you know who is conducting the study or what the product is, you can find the paper. All paper has a material section where they tell you how much of the active ingredient was used.

What i described above may sound easy enough, but the public’s access to theses papers may be limited. Or you’ll have to pay for the publications. Try searching for these paper on a college campus. THey usually give you free access to science journals. Otherwise, it’ll be about 30-50 bucks per paper.

The journal of Dermatology is a great reference. In general, I would stay away from products with huge promises. No product on the market will revise the hands of time. But good product can slow down the aging process.

I wouldn’t use price as an indicator of quality. If you’re interested in a product,look up the active ingredient. And go compare it to an over the counter product. Usually, I can find something that is not as expensive with the same concentration of active ingredient. Hope that helps!
