Is cinnamon safe in home made skin care?
I wanted to make epsom bath salts and maybe even a mask with clay and baking soda,too . So it won’t be just pure cinnamon. I swear I read somewhere that cinnamon wasn’t supposed to go directly on the skin, but now I can’t find it.
Oh, and I’m talking about the spice in powder form, not the bark or the large pieces.
I have made skin care products for years, and have used cinnamon many times as an ingredient. Yes, cinnamon CAN be a skin irritant, but that is in oil form. The powdered cinnamon that you get in the spice section of the grocery store will not harm you.
Cinnamon oil is used largely in massage oils, seeing as how it warms and stimulates the skin. The oil is never applied directly, but is always put into a carrier oil, such as almond, so that it doesn’t irritate the skin.
A good mask for acne is 3 teaspoons of honey and 1 teaspoon of powdered cinnamon. Leave it on for a few hours, then rinse off with warm water.
For a facial smoothie, you can combine a small handful of blueberries, half of an avocado, a few spoon fulls of plain yogurt, a dash of vanilla extract and a teaspoon or two of powdered cinnamon. Leave on the face for around 15 minutes, then rinse off with warm water.
Most of the skin irritating oils in cinnamon is lost during processing, so it is safe.
